History:
The Hamburg Fish market was initially meant the old fish market on Hamburg-Altstadt. It had nothing to do with the famous Altona Fish market. During the 70s of the 19th century, the Hamburg suburban St. Pauli Auction Hall moved closer to Altona for attractive fishing.
In the years 1894 to 1942, the city built the hall on the embankment where the fisherman docked in Elbe River, so as to agree with the Hamburg’s customs with Deutsche Reich to keep the fishing trade alive. The beautiful hall was inspired after the Roman market hall with basilica having two aisles, a center transept, and crossing dome, which inspired the design of Christian church. Forty-eight years later, the lovely industrial hall burned in flames due to the bombing. After the war, a makeshift roof was built, and the building was temporarily repaired. The auctions were halted in the mid-1950s, and the fishmongers, gallery offices, fish tanks and stands below, etc. followed. By the early 70s, the hall stood completely destroyed and empty to the eyesore. Annihilation was unavoidable, with funds already allotted.
During the years 1943 and 1984: In 1978 the director of urban planning report for the area of the Fish Market and Flood control proposed the restoration and release of the hall for the usage of the market. After four years, the work was ready to initialize, and the old plans and pictures were brought from the documents to refer to the new scheme. The gable, roof and dome had to be rebuilt with the special touch for both public as well as private events. The present day, the morning visitors are frequently come over to enjoy the hall. The tourists also enjoy the significant economic and social function held here and are charmed with its architectural beauty and the ocean waters.
