The Kreuztor was built in the year 1385 as the western gateway to the city of Ingolstadt. The name of the tower is borrowed from a leper house which belonged to the Church of Holy Cross. This church stood in the city of Ingolstadt on the western side of the city walls. This was finally destroyed during the Schmalkaldic War which took place in the year 1546.
This guard tower which is seven turreted was a part of the second city wall of the city of Ingolstadt. The city of Ingolstadt had four gates which were principal to the city, by the name of Kreuztor, Donautor, Hardertor and Feldkirchnertor. Kreuztor and Feldkirchnertor are the only two gates which have survived till date. Feldkirchnertor is a part of the famous castle complex.
The red brick outline of the Kreuztor is definitely fairy tale like as is now the emblem of the city of Ingolstadt.
