Cologne or Köln is one of the largest cities in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The place is situated within the Rhine-Ruhr metro region and is regarded as one of the prominent metropolitan regions in Germany.

Cologne has the Rhine River on both the sides and is less than eighty km from Belgium. One of the Europe’s largest and oldest universities called the University of Cologne is located here. Also, the city’s famous Cologne Cathedral seats the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne.

Till the World War II period, the city Cologne had undergone several occupations by the French people and even the British around the period 1918-1926. It was seen that the bombings reduced the population of the city by a drastic 95% because of evacuation and had destroyed the entire city! History

The roots of the city Cologne can be traced back to almost 2000 years ago. At this time the cologne was still ruled by the Romans, this makes it one of the oldest cities in Germany. They had found the Village Ubii on the Rhine during the 50AD and had named it Colonia. At this time the imperial governors of Rome stayed here and very soon the town had begun to grow into one of the very important trades and production centers of the Roman Empire north of the Alps. Also, there are traces of the inhabitants leaving behind many of their culture and traditions in the town center, evidence of which can be seen in the Romano-Germanic Museum.

At the time of Second World War, as mentioned before, almost 90 percent of the city was destroyed with just 40,000 people still staying in the city area. There were initial thoughts of giving up the old area, but slowly work began in the year 1947 that was aimed at rebuilding the Old Town. You will find several post-war architecture marvels that still portray the characteristics of the face of Cologne today. Now, the Rhine Metropolis is regarded as the fourth largest German city and also one of the significant travel destinations located in Germany and Europe.

Around 55 international trade fairs are conducted in the city and welcomes more than two million visitors. Apart from this the shopping streets, a variety of restaurants and shopping arcades have been attracting many visitors over the recent years.
